About 80 kilometers from Paris is one of the best preserved Gothic cathedrals in all of Europe: Notre-Dame de Chartres. It looks a little worn out, which is no surprise at its being over 800 years old, but it is still absolutely amazing.

The Hôtel de Ville is a massive building just across the river from Notre-Dame de Paris, and it is also just a 2 minute walk from where I'm staying. They have an ice rink and merry-go-round out in front right now, and it's fun stand around and watch all the different people pass by.

Notre-Dame de Paris along the Seine

Paris is a wonderful place for taking Panoramas. Even though I don't have my nice camera or pano-tripod setup, I've still managed to take some decent photos. This one was taken just after the sun had set and they had turned on the lights at Notre-Dame de Paris. The things on the chain-link fence are locks with people's names or initials inscribed upon them. Quite a beautiful sight.

In the meantime, here's another picture from our trip to The Big Island last year. Akaka Falls State Park, located north of Hilo, was quite the treat for all of us. There's a paved loop trail that takes you through an incredibly lush forest with all types of plants and climaxes with the amazing view of the 422-foot Akaka Falls shown here.

I've been working on a movie (like the one I did for the 4th of July) of our trip to The Big Island last year and it sure does bring back great memories. I can't believe that we were able to live in Hawaii, what an awesome experience! I just upgraded to Aperture 3 recently and I've been going through some of my old photos and found this nice photo of the Salt Lake Temple that I took this past Christmas. Even though Christmas time in Utah can be ridiculously cold, especially at night, seeing the lights at Temple Square is something that can't be missed if you have the chance.

Tomoe and I both enjoy watching fireworks (well, I enjoy photographing them more than watching them) and we had heard that the largest 4th of July fireworks show in the region would be at the San Diego Bay. I knew instantly that I wanted to go to Coronado to take photos of the fireworks with the beautiful Downtown San Diego skyline in the background. Unfortunately, about a million other people had the same idea. Even though the traffic was ridiculous, we had a great time and I was able to take some good photos. Autopano Pro also managed to stitch 8 sloppy photos (with different fireworks in each photo!) into a pretty decent panorama.

I hope all my fellow Americans had a great Independence Day as well :-)

This is one of my favorite photos from Japan, not just because I like the photo but that there's a fun memory behind it. The day before heading back home we went to Odaiba to check out the sights and hopefully take some good photos (well, that's what I wanted :-P). I had in mind that I wanted to take a photo of the famous Rainbow Bridge but I wasn't too sure of the layout of Odaiba so I didn't really know where to go. I looked at a map and made my best guesstimate and headed off in that direction on foot. Tomoe didn't want to sit around and wait so she went shopping while I had my adventure. I'd injured my foot a couple days prior so the going was slow, but I made due. I hobbled along a beach, through a dark forest and some maze-looking structure, over a fence, and found my way here. There were a couple guys fishing in the dark on the pier below while I set up my tripod and camera next to a 15 foot drop-off into the ocean. Anyway, I took a ton of photos and ended up being an hour late to my rendezvous with Tomoe (luckily, she went ahead and did some more shopping). Afterwards we got some yummy ramen :-)

First off, I know the panoramas are getting covered up by the side bar. Yeah it's annoying and I'm trying to figure something out, for the time being just click the image to see it in it's own browser.

Mesa Arch, located in the Island in the Sky district of Canyonlands National Park, is probably the most famous arch outside of Arches National Park. It's especially renowned as a great spot to see the sunrise. We wanted to see the sunrise, but instead decided to do some Astrophotography the night prior and couldn't get up early enough for the long drive to Mesa Arch from Moab. We decided instead to go in the late afternoon and got there just in time to get some decent light before it was covered in shadow. Mesa Arch juts out from the edge of the precipice with a blind drop of some 1000 feet. In the distance you can see the snowcapped La Sal Mountains.

Ah Mr. Sea Turtle, no matter how many times I was able to catch a glance of you, it was always as if I were seeing you for the first time. Whether it was a brief glimpse from Halona Blowhole when you surfaced for air, snorkeling at Hanauma Bay as you nibbled on the coral, or as the case is here, resting at the aptly named Turtle Beach; you never failed to impress me with your quiet nobility. With a crowd of onlookers following you successful beach landing, you close your eyes and stand aloof from the gawkers, content in your solitude.

Out of all the wildlife that I saw in Hawaii, the Monk Seal was my favorite. They just have such a wonderful character that's easy to read and understand. They hop up on the lava rocks and lay out in the sun to take a nap. So peaceful, so carefree - you just can't help feel like lying down and taking a nap yourself! Sun shining on your chest, wind blowing through your hair (or not), bone-white rocks under your rump, and the sound of the waves singing you to sleep.

For some reason there were a lot of dead crabs on the lava rocks at Ka'ena Point this day. I love the colors and the bubble-like eyes that seem like they're just about to pop.

I was just looking through some of my old wildlife photos and thought I'd share a couple. This is a Laysan Albatross that was taken at Ka'ena Point on Oahu last October. They have enormous wingspans, around 7 feet or more, and they have the most wonderful character. They do this dance where they get up on one leg and bob up and down from leg to leg, it's hilarious.

Astrophotography is one of the few types of photography where you just have to have the right gear to get the shot, there's no way around it. My D80 just couldn't handle it, I'd do a three or four minute exposure and the picture would be riddled with artifacts and unusable levels of noise. Needless to say, I'd been eager to try again with the D700 since I got it last August and I finally had the chance when we visited Arches this past January. As you can see above, it handled itself very well to say the least!

Star trails are something that I've wanted to photograph for some time now and I'm pleased with how the photo turned out but I realized that I need to study up a bit more on the whole Astronomy thing. While we were up there I was trying to figure out how to find the North Star but I just could quite remember and unfortunately my trusty iPhone didn't have service so I couldn't rely on that. Luckily the stars aren't going anywhere so there's always next time!

I enjoy messing around with HDR photography but I see it mainly as a fine art tool, rather than a dynamic range solution. I think the effects are a bit too hyper-realistic in most situations that it's better to just take it to the extreme, instead of trying to pass it off as being a true representation of the subject being photographed.

The "guy" above is definitely on the abstract side, so I used HDR to create an abstract photograph as well. Somehow I think it evens itself out and creates something almost.... natural?

It seems that it will shortly be cherry blossom time in Japan and while we went too early to see them, we were able to see the plum blossoms starting to bloom.

I'm kind of amazed at how interested Japanese people seem to be in seeing the trees start to bloom. I don't think the average American even gives it the slightest thought (I know I don't), but it seems like a national past time over there.

One of the places that I most enjoyed taking photos in Sapporo this past trip was at "Geijitsu no Mori," aka "Art Forest." It's basically a large park filled with sculptures and contemporary art pieces. A lot of it was covered by snow but it was still a lot of fun and I would highly recommend it to people visiting Sapporo with an afternoon to kill.

First off, let me say that wedding photography isn't exactly my favorite type of photography. I enjoy taking pictures of people but it's such a "challenge" dealing with the crowds of other "photographers" and people looking every which way.

With that said, I enjoyed photographing my good friend Daiki's wedding last Saturday in Omotesando (Tokyo). While they had hired some professional wedding photographers for the event, they asked me to take plenty of pictures as well.

It was a lot of fun and the wedding was wonderful.

If I had to choose a favorite arch in Arches National Park it would most likely be Delicate Arch. It's just so iconic and inspires so much awe upon seeing it for the first (or second, third, fourth...) time. It's probably been photographed in every conceivable way innumerable times but I still had to make my own personal interpretation of it for myself. I also did quite a few panoramas which I'll post at a future time.

Tomoe, Lucy, Mom, and I went over to Promontory Point a couple days ago to take some photos together. We found this little abandoned home along the Great Salt Lake about half an hour from the point and it ended up being the best spot on our brief trip out there. The sky was almost completely monotone but thanks to some HDR photography I was able to extract some great shapes from it.

When Brigham Young came to the Salt Lake Valley with the other pioneers he declared that "this is the place." For the first time I think I may have an idea of what it felt like for them to have finally reached the destination they had been dreaming of for months. Even though the land was essentially barren at the time, I can imagine the sense of joy and wonderment they must have felt upon seeing this view for the first time.

After being super busy with temporarily moving to Utah and getting settled here I finally made the time to work on some more of Richie Titcomb's portfolio photos. The hardest part was selecting which one's I wanted to use, I'm really glad I got Aperture 2 otherwise it would have been overwhelming.

I think they turned out pretty well and she seems to be pleased. There are still some more I want to work on and do some more intensive editing, but for now this will have to do. Let me know which one's you like :-)

There's this place on Young street where an entire wall is covered in really cool graffiti and I'd been dying to take Tomoe there to do some fun portraits.

She wasn't terribly happy to be forced into modeling for me but once she got into it we both had a lot of fun.

The models were all students from University of Hawaii and they did a very good job, I was quite impressed.

I was walking out to the tip of Ka'ena Point, hoping to get some pictures of some monk seals and albatross, when I noticed a rather pronounced "birdy" smell. I looked down and found this fairly large baby wedge-tailed shearwater in it's nesting hole. Luckily it wasn't very camera shy and mommy wasn't nearby so I was able to get some good shots.

We drove up to the summit of Mauna Kea at three in the morning to watch the sunrise and do some night photography. As I was photographing the stars with the NASA Infrared Telescope in the foreground I noticed a red beam in some of the photographs that was completely invisible to the naked eye. Obviously I was ecstatic and took as many photographs as I could before the sun rose and the telescopes shut down for the night. This one is my favorite. The red beam, used in a system called "Adaptive Optics," measures the wavelength of the atmospheric interference so the mirrors can compensate for that interference and produce images that are comparable to those produced by space probes.
